Congress Holds Mass Sit-in and Submits Memorandum in Dharmanagar to “Save MGNREGA”

Staff Reporter, Dharmanagar:Demanding the protection of the right to work under the MGNREGA scheme, and the safeguarding of non-violence and constitutional values, the North District Congress on Friday organised a mass sit-in and deputation programme in Dharmanagar.The protest was held in front of the district administrative building, where a significant number of party workers and supporters were present.Congress leaders alleged that the MGNREGA scheme has been pushed into crisis due to the policies of the Central Government. They claimed that MGNREGA, a crucial source of livelihood for rural people, is being systematically weakened. Addressing the gathering, speakers said that the right to work is a fundamental right, yet under the present circumstances many labourers are being deprived of fair employment opportunities and timely wages.Those present at the programme included North District Congress President Digbijay Chakraborty, Pradesh Congress Committee members Chayan Bhattacharjee and Kabel Nandi, District Congress Committee member Indrajit Pal, along with several other district-level Congress leaders.After the sit-in, a delegation submitted a memorandum to North District Magistrate Chandni Chandran. The memorandum demanded the immediate creation of adequate work opportunities under MGNREGA, prompt payment of pending wages, maintenance of transparency in the scheme, and the protection of democratic rights and constitutional values.Congress leaders warned that if their demands are not met, the party will launch a larger movement in the coming days. The programme concluded peacefully.
